It all begins with an idea. Maybe we could . . . Film the Nutcracker dances this year. Write a screenplay. Hire a film crew. Make a movie. On a tight budget, a short timeline, and in a remote location. Yes, that’s us!

Wild Rivers Coast Foundation for Dance (WRCFD) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to dance and arts in the isolated region of the Wild Rivers Coast of Oregon. We work to promote dance, support art and cultural education, and encourage social justice for all people.

Launched in 2016, WRCFD helps organize and fund dance performances, including the Annual Nutcracker Ballet. We educate the public about dance and support public performances, including free performances for local schools and senior facilities. We also provide dance scholarships and support summer activities for local youth.

Just as important, we endeavor to build much needed community activities, not just during the holiday season, but all through the year. Our young people need a sense of belonging they may otherwise lack, especially after two years of pandemic isolation. Over the past two and a half years, many youth lost their “high school moments,” their sense of purpose, and the activities that help them safely develop their well-being, creative potential and community involvement.

A Small Town Nutcracker Story is just one of our projects, but in bringing the Nutcracker Ballet to the big screen through narrative storytelling, we give voice to how our kids deal with disappointment and challenges, and their stories serve as an apt metaphor for our larger community in the struggle to cope and thrive.
